Sapling AI Detector Review
Sapling is better known for grammar checking. Their AI detector is quietly one of the best free options — especially if you want an API.
Rating: 4/5 ink blots
What is Sapling?
Sapling is an AI writing assistant company (grammar, autocomplete for customer support teams). They added an AI content detector that's surprisingly capable — and they give developers a real free API tier, not just a marketing demo.
Pricing
- Free API: Thousands of characters per day — enough for small projects
- Pro: ~$25/month — higher limits, team features
- Web checker: Free, no account required for basic use
Our accuracy tests
- ChatGPT essay: Flagged as AI-generated. Score ~0.02 (Sapling uses a 0–1 scale where lower = more AI). Correct.
- Human blog post: Score ~0.91. Correct.
- Humanized text: Score ~0.45 — uncertain zone. Better than GPTZero's miss, still not definitive.
Pros
- Generous free API — rare in this space
- Less overconfident than GPTZero's percentage display
- Fast responses, clean documentation
- Also offers grammar/coaching tools if you need them
Cons
- Not a household name — harder to justify to administrators
- No LMS plugins like GPTZero
- Primarily English-focused
- UI is functional, not beautiful (ironic for us to say)
Verdict
Use Sapling if: You're building something that needs AI detection via API, or you want a solid free checker without the GPTZero hype.
Skip it if: You need a tool your school's IT department already approved.
